Kintyre Travel Information

Overview

Kintyre has a reasonably reliable transport infrastructure, from long distance coaches from Glasgow to Campbeltown, to local transport including buses, taxis and of course ferries. Travelling to Kintyre is straight forward and there are various methods in which you can get to us.

By Air

A 25 minute 'hop' from Glasgow to Campbeltown airport, twice daily. Service by British Airways (Loganair). Car rental is available in Campbeltown, but not at the airport which is very small. Usually the car rental companies will arrange to meet you at the airport with your car.

By Bus & Coach

There is a regular coach service from Glasgow to Campbeltown, three times daily. The journey takes about four and a half hours and the service is provided by City Link and West Coast Motors.

By Ferry

By Car (Tourist & Visitor Routes)

By road only: From Glasgow there is a 2½ hour drive to Tarbert or nearer 3 hours to Campbeltown through some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland including the ‘Bonnie banks’ of Loch Lomond. Follow the A82 from Glasgow and then the A83. For those not used to our quaint habit of driving on the left side of the road allow a little more time for the journey.

By car/ferry: Option 1 From Glasgow to Ardrossan (Ayrshire), then ferry to Brodick (Island of Arran).

(Please note that the ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick should be booked in advance).

Drive round North of Arran to Lochranza, then ferry to Claonaig on Kintyre - Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries.

NB: The service to Claonaig runs during the Summer timetable only.

By car/ferry: Option 2 From Glasgow to Gourock on the river Clyde, then ferry to Dunoon. (Cal Mac. or Western Ferries).

Drive to Portavadie on Loch Fyne, then Ferry to Tarbert on Kintyre. (Cal Mac).

By car/ferry: Option 3 To Wemyss Bay on the river Clyde, then ferry to Rothesay (Island of Bute). Short drive to Rhubodach.

Then the ferry to Colintraive on Cowal - Cal Mac Ferries. Drive to Portavadie.

Then ferry to Tarbert on Kintyre -(Cal Mac Ferries).

Blue Routes = Alternative routes including two ferry crossings from Ayrshire or Renfrewshire.
Purple Route = Road route taken by coaches, and advised from Glasgow by car.
