Kintyre FAQ | Tarbert, Knapdale & North Kintyre

Q: There are several places in Scotland called Tarbert or Tarbet. What does it mean?
A: It comes from the Gaelic 'Tairbeart' meaning a narrow isthmus. It was here that the Norse King Magnus Bareleg and later King Robert the Bruce had their galleys pulled overland from one stretch of water to the other.
Q: How big is the 'Scottish Series' Regatta and when does it take place?
A: Between 250 and 300 boats compete in the regatta, which is second only to Cowes in numbers. The regatta takes place in May (see events for actual dates). If you want a bed in Tarbert during the regatta, book early. (About a year in advance will probably do).
