Additional Spurs & Walks In Kintyre
Tarbert & North Kintyre
If you do not wish to undertake the challenge offered by any of the Kintyre Way sections and are content with short attractive walks then Tarbert is a great place to stay.
There are popular unofficial walks, up the 'high road' to the war monument and viewpoint, up to the castle to sit and watch over the village, along Pier road by east pier where the waverley visits during the spring and summer, or around the harbour to the small section of pebble beach know locally as the white shore. These are just a few of the short walks accessible from your doorstep.
Atlantic Seaboard
The west coast of Kintyre features five sections of simply stunning coastline including Machrihanish Bay, Chleit Beach, and 'Flatstone Beach'. If you prefer a short drive along a country road, and a quiet stroll along the beach listening to the waves and water gently lapping at your feet with almost no other people around, then you will love Kintyre and particularly the east coast.
Of course, you can drive to Tayinloan and take the ferry on foot to Gigha and walk around the island there which offers more of the undisturbed peace and tranquility that Kintyre offers.
The Carradale Coast
Several short walks by gently falling water and up to small lochs are available between Claonaig and Campbeltown on the east coast of Kintyre.
More information on these walks will be available soon (section last updated 3rd December 2010)
Campbeltown & Machrihanish
Once again, if leisurely walks are your thing, you can walk along the fantastic Machrihanish Bay, to the side of Machrihanish Golf Club, or along the roadway through Machrihanish to the Bird Observatory at the very end.
At Campbeltown, perhaps a preferred walk around the many shops, along the harbour side into the visitor information centre for more information, or across to Davaar island (carefully planning and watching the tide times!) to see the Crucifixion painting in the cave there.
For more of a challenge why not try the climb up Beinn Ghuilean?
Southend & Dunaverty (Mull Of Kintyre)
You cannot escape the quality of coastline and beach to explore and enjoy, each section is different and is a pleasure to wander along at your leisure. The gentle sounds of the waves is calming, and the views are inspiring!
At Dunaverty there are several bays and coastlines to explore, and further west (drive to the car park by the locked gate) you can walk the several miles to the Mull Of Kintyre Lighthouse and be presented with spectacular coastal views not just of Kintyre below you, but across to Rathlin Island and Northern Ireland.
Golf - A Good Walk Spoiled!
One way to enjoy a brisk walk and exercise is through a game of golf. Keen golfers are spoilt for choice in Kintyre with five golf courses from north to south, plus another on Gigha.
At the Mull Of Kintyre alone there are three great links holf courses to choose from, each with different views, different challenges, but all with 18 holes of great outdoor exercise.
Whatever your interest, there are walks to suit everyone here on Kintyre.
