Skipness

History, Castles & Views Of Arran

The Kintyre Way

On Foot: walking by Tarbert castle and continuing for roughly 8 miles over the hills via forestry track and woodland path you can reach Skipness in approximately four hours.

By Car Or Bus: driving to Skipness by car will take approximately 25 minutes along the A83 before turning left onto the B8001 signposted Skipness. A regular bus travels from Tarbert to Skipness.

Skipness has an impressive castle, building commenced in the 13th Century and was abandoned at the end of the 17th. The strong thick walled castle withstood a seige by the MacDonalds during Colkitto raids who turned their attention to Dunaverty where they massacred inhabitants there. The chapel close by is in posession of some interesting medieval tombstones in wooden protective cases.
