Muasdale

Packhorse Bridge, Poppies, Seals & Isle Of Gigha Ferry

The Kintyre Way

By Cycle Or Car: Travel north from Glenbarr on the A83 to Muasdale and Tayinloan

In between Campbeltown and Tarbert are several small hamlets and villages.

Muasdale is the next inhabited village on your way northwards, behind the village and to the centre line of Kintyre is the peak of Beinn Bhreac.

A fantastic stretch of sandy beach stretches from Muasdale to A Chleit where there is an old church and small school. The beach is excellent, sandy, and has lots of rocky interest including unusual sandstone formations jutting from the sea onto the shore. You can easily see Gigha and the wind turbines that stand at the southern most point if the island.

Along the roadside you may see wild poppies growing with deep red petals protruding from the grass and you may also see a bird of prey sitting still on the rocks or fences at the side of the road.

There is a small shop here for any daily supplies such as bread and milk.

Heading northwards still brings you to Tayinloan, you will pass Killean Estate on your right hand side and the fantastic 'Dolls Houses' that sit to the side of the road, where you turn left and take the second left once more to drive down to the ferry terminal.

I use the term 'terminal' very loosely, there is however a concrete slipway provides access for vehicles and passengers on and off of the ferry which runs on every hour all day, most of the year.

You may see some wildlife here including horses in the nearby fields.

Travelling further north once more for only a mile or so brings you to the entrance of Point Sands Holiday Park. Turn left at the school and drive down the roadway for about 2 miles to its end (going over small speed bumps) and you will come to the clearing there.

Point Sands has one of the best beaches in Kintyre, has a shop and a small cafe, perfect for a break on your drive through, and although the land is privately owned, the general public has full access to the beach and the fantastic shallow water here.
