The Top 5 Beaches In Kintyre For Walking
1 Westport
Only 10 minutes north of Campbeltown by car, Westport beach is as popular with walkers as it is with surfers and windsurfers.
The large car park is empty much of the time, although westport is one of the most used of Kintyre's beaches.
The beach is popular with dog walkers, and joins up with Machrihanish Bay at the other end where Machrihanish Golf Course nestles in the dunes.
It is not uncommon for surfers to camp here in the dunes during the warmer months ready to catch the surf at the best times of the day, generally though everyone is on their best behaviour!
Westport is a sandy beach, with great waves, and sometimes offering incredible sunsets.
*There are sometimes temporary toilets placed here during the summer only.
2 Point Sands
Midway along the Atlantic Seaboard about a mile or so north of Tayinloan is Point Sands.
The several kilometre single track road that leaves the A83 takes you slowly to the private holiday park where there is camping facilities, touring pitches and self catering units.
Leaving your car in the car park you can wander through the park and the woodland or up to the gees nesting point at the northern end of the park or simply wander over the dunes onto what is arguable one of the best beaches in Scotland. Looking left and right you are presented with a clear golden sandy beach than stretches for several kilometres.
Not only is the beach in superb order, largely litter free, but you will also find the water crystal clear and the gradient so shallow that you can paddle and even swim safely most of the time as the water here can be very still.
On top of that you have stunning views across to Gigha and a chance to witness some stunning sunsets!
3 A Chleit
On the east coast of Kintyre a good kilometre or so north of Muasdale is the small hamlet of A Chleit where there is a good sized car park (by Kintyre standards) and an unusual rustic church.
The stunning golden beach that awaits overlooks the southern most portion of Gigha and stretches for several kilometres all the way through Muasdale.
The water is clear, the sand is beautifully fine and golden, and the waves lap the shore like any other beach found at premium holiday destinations and not dissimilar to the quality beaches found on the remote islands.
Mid way along this beach you will find the most unusual sandstone formations with swirled circles caused by the waves gently boring out holes in the stone.
If you like camping, have a tourer, or fancy a holiday in a self catering apartment why not go to Muasdale Holiday Park, they have all three with access from their touring park right to the beach!
4 Flatstone
About 2 miles south of Ronachan Point is a small turn off on the right hand side of the road into a small off road area with space for a handful of cars.
Turn in just at the corner to the right (if facing south) and park your car before walking down on to the beach.
This beach is not sand but stone, most of the stones are flat skimming stones or large flat oval stones hence the nickname 'Flatstone Beach'.
What's fantastic and unique about this stretch is that while it is stone beach, when the tide slowly goes out it reveals nice soft sand, there is no seawead, and the water is beautifully clear.
You can walk from here along the stone and pebble beach form several miles and eventually end up at Point Sands beach which is a good number of miles around the coast (this stretch is on the Kintyre Way long distance walk).
5 Carradale Bay
And finally the last of our top five of Kintyre's best beaches goes to Carradale Bay.
Driving into Carradale, turning left following the signs for Dunvalanree and Port Righ, continue straight on for several hundred yards and you will see a closed gate.
Open the gate and drive through following the track for several hundred yards and you will appear at a clearing used for car parking.
Ahead of you is one of the best beaches in Kintyre without a doubt, again the golden sands curve gently round the coastal inlet and provide a good walk for several kilometres with various extensions into woodland.
