Kintyre way - Section 6 Kilgour House, a very comfortable and cosy Victorian Villa, is the closest B&B to Machrihanish Golf Club. Two twin rooms both with seaviews, provide warm and comfortable lodgings. Each with its own private bathroom, colourTV and tea/coffee making facilities. | |
| Overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green and with glorious views of the Inner Hebrides the onlooker is provided with lasting memories of the most vivid of sunsets, dolphins cavorting in the bay, divebombing gannets, a flock of oystercatchers, (resident on and the emblem of the Golf Course) and many other seabird varieties. Although the speciality of the area is Machrihanish Golf Course, Kilgour House also welcomes those indulging in walking holidays, bird and wildlife watching, surfing and other sporting activities. Accommodation Two twin rooms both with seaviews, provide warm and comfortable lodgings. Each with its own private bathroom, colourTV and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a spacious Residents Lounge, also overlooking the bay, which provides an alternative option for those who wish to read or relax in peace and quiet. There are also drying facilities for those wet days. Food and Drink A full Scottish breakfast is served each day in our elegant dining room and most diets can be catered for. Evening meals are available at Machrihanish Golf Club or at the nearby Beachcomber Restaurant. For something more unusual Campbeltown, a short 5 minute drive or by bus or taxi, has various restaurants to suit the most discerning of taste buds. Leisure With a mild "Gulf Stream" caressing its shores Kintyre is known as "God`s Country" with Machrihanish and its environs, in particular, seeming to have its own climate. Snow is practically unheard of and while it does on occasion rain, bring your umbrella! The countryside offers a wide variety to explore and enjoy, from peaceful farmland to wild cliffs, moorland, forests, sandy beaches, historical castles and forts and easy reached islands by foot and by boat. Campbeltown, the commercial centre of the region, has all the amenities of a small town and fishing port together with its new swimming pool and library complex. The area is well catered for the holiday maker with facilities for riding, tennis, bowls, putting, sailing, surfing, sea angling, loch and river fishing for trout, unlimited walking, hiking and cycling. Together with all of the above there are also three golf courses with the jewel in the crown being Machrihanish. Machrihanish- the very name borders on the mystical-was founded in 1876. Originally named the Kintyre Golf Club, Machrihanish is perhaps the most geographically remote of all the great golf courses in the British Isles. Machrihanish never being golf`s greatest secret, Old Tom Morris first let the cat out of the bag when he visited the links to advise on any alterations to the layout. Old Tom declared that "The Almighty must have had gowf in his ee when He designed Machrihanish!" For the lover of traditional links golf Machrihanish has everything with huge undulating greens and fairways. The natural character of the course provides awkward stances and blind shots very much a feature. Green fees are most reasonable, with weekly and fortnightly concessions available. There is also a 9 hole course, affectionally known as The Ladies and two practice grounds. Standing bewitched on the first tee at majestic Machrihanish with the Atlantic rollers crashing below "and a stretch of beach that a camel would have difficulty to cross" and just as the song told us it would, "the mist rolling in from the sea", dare you smash one across the Bay, or do you play safe out to the right where your ball might in fact settle on the front lawn of Kilgour House.
