Campbeltown & Machrihanish

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does Campbeltown Airport have such a long runway?
It has the second longest runway in Europe because the airfield was, for many years, a NATO Base with a permanent American presence. The runway was designed for the largest transport aircraft and possibly for testing top secret aircraft.

Q: Is it possible to walk out to Davaar Island?

Davaar Island is at the entrance to Campbeltown Loch and is connected to the mainland by a tidal causeway. Please consult the Tourist Information Centre in Campbeltown for tide times before making the trip. The owners of the island prefer walkers to keep to the shoreline on the island. Follow the shore round and you will come to the cave with the famous painting of the Crucifixion. The walk is quite strenuous and demands sensible footwear.

Q: What is the significance of the large stone cross in the town ? The Campbeltown Cross is an outstanding example of medieval stone carving dating from around 1380. It was probably carved at Saddell Abbey a short distance from the town as this was a leading centre for stone carvings.

Q: Where the FAQ is Campbeltown ?
At the end of Scotland's most beautiful peninsula.
